Is 570 a good credit score?

No, 570 is a poor score, ten points from the edge of Fair. It sits near the top of FICO's Poor range and in VantageScore's Subprime tier. Almost everything at this score is about the next ten points: an FHA loan at 570 needs 10% down, and at 580 it needs 3.5%.

580 changes two FHA rules at once. The minimum down payment drops from 10% to 3.5%, and on manually underwritten loans HUD's debt limits rise from 31% of income for housing and 43% overall to 37% and 47%, or 40% and 50% with compensating factors. Ten points is a short climb with an unusually large payoff.

What a 570 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Limited

FHA with at least 10% down today. With 580 this close, it may pay to delay an application by a few statement cycles rather than bring the full 10%.

Car loan

Limited

Car financing may be available, subject to lender requirements. If your VantageScore 4.0 is in the 501-600 tier, Experian’s Q2 2026 averages were 13.52% new and 19.1% used. A FICO 570 does not establish that VantageScore; compare actual APR, amount and term.

Credit cards

Limited

Secured cards are the dependable route. At 570 you are close to the range that cards marketed for fair credit are aimed at, so a few months of clean history widens the choice.

Renting

Possible

Some landlords will rent at this score with a larger deposit or a co-signer; others will not. There is no official minimum, so ask about the screening standard before paying an application fee.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

myFICO's published rate bands begin at 620 for mortgages and 640 for cars, so there is no FICO-band price for 570. The car chart below uses Experian's averages by VantageScore tier, where 570 sits in the upper part of the subprime step.

On this chart, 570 and 600 pay the same average, and 601 pays less. Ten points to 580 does not move the car price; another twenty-one would.

For a mortgage, FHA is the realistic route, and 570 is the most frustrating place to stand under its rules. As an illustration, on a $200,000 home 10% down is $20,000 and 3.5% would be $7,000, so a borrower ten points short needs $13,000 more in cash. FHA also requires a three-bureau credit report, which means the lender sees all three of your scores: check each one, since a 570 at one bureau may sit next to a different number at another.

Closing costs, mortgage insurance and lender requirements are additional. These examples assume the price equals the FHA adjusted value; a lower appraisal can change the cash needed.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

How to get from 570 to 580

Ten points is a short numerical gap, but neither the gain nor the time needed is predictable from the score alone.

  1. Check all three reports for errors. At this distance, one misreported late payment or a collection that is not yours may be the whole gap. Disputes are free and the bureaus must investigate.
  2. Lower your reported card balances. Amounts owed are 30% of a FICO score, and the change shows as soon as issuers report the lower balances.
  3. Add nothing new. An application adds an inquiry and a new account lowers the average age of your history; new credit and length of history together make up 25% of a FICO score.
  4. Keep paying on time. Payment history is 35%. A late payment now would push the target further away just as it comes into reach.

If a lender is already involved, tell it how close you are. The decision rests on the scores in the three-bureau report it pulls, so that report is the one worth timing. From January 2027, FHA will also accept VantageScore 4.0 and FICO 10T, with the same 500 and 580 thresholds whatever the model.

What a Poor score means (300 to 579)

Credit is still possible, but on the lender's terms: deposits, co-signers and high rates. 14.7% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the poor range means in practice.

Questions about a 570 score

Can I get an FHA loan with a 570 credit score?

Yes, with at least 10% down. At 580 the minimum falls to 3.5%, and HUD's debt-to-income limits on manually underwritten loans loosen too.

Is 570 a fair credit score?

No. FICO's Fair range starts at 580, so 570 is in the Poor range. On VantageScore it is Subprime, a tier that runs up to 600.
