Is 820 a good credit score?

Yes, 820 is exceptional, and past this point the score is no longer the reason for a yes or a no. It is 20 points into FICO's Exceptional range and Superprime on VantageScore. When an 820 borrower is turned down or offered less than expected, the cause sits in the rest of the application: income, existing debt, recent accounts.

820 has no next rung because pricing stopped at 780, 40 points ago. What can still change your terms lives outside the score: how much of your income already goes to debt, how much you put down, how many accounts you opened lately.

What an 820 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Options available

On credit, you are in the best band. On everything else you are judged like anyone: debt-to-income ratio, down payment, savings and the property all have to pass, and a high score does not carry a weak one.

Car loan

Options available

820 is in our top published FICO reference band. If your VantageScore 4.0 is also at least 781, Experian’s superprime tier averaged 4.41% on new cars in Experian's Q2 2026 data. The loan term and the down payment change the deal more than the score can now.

Credit cards

Options available

Premium cards are realistic, but issuers weigh stated income, existing card debt and recent applications. The rate is another story: a CFPB study of cards offered in 2023 found the largest issuers charged 8 to 10 points more than small banks and credit unions in every credit tier, the top one included.

Renting

Options available

Not a concern. A landlord who runs a screening report will spend more time on your income and rental history than on this number.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

What 820 costs you in interest

Both charts put 820 on the bottom bar, shared with everyone from 780 to 850. Your actual rate will differ from that bar for reasons the chart cannot show: the loan size, the term, the down payment and the lender you pick.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

What lenders weigh once your score is settled

At 820 the effort worth making goes into the rest of the file. Where to look instead of the score:

  1. Debt-to-income. Mortgage lenders divide your monthly debt payments by your gross monthly income. Paying off a small car loan or personal loan before you apply can do more for an approval than any score gain could.
  2. Income you can document. Card issuers ask for it; mortgage lenders verify it. If your income is irregular or you are self-employed, the paperwork will matter far more than the score.
  3. Recent applications. Issuers can see the accounts you opened recently, and some turn down applicants who opened several, at any score.
  4. The down payment. It sets the size of the loan, and with it the monthly payment the lender has to believe you can carry.

None of this shows up in a credit score app, which is why an 820 can still come back with a smaller limit than asked for, or a counteroffer.

What an Exceptional score means (800 to 850)

The Exceptional label starts at 800; our top daily FICO reference band starts at 780. 22.8% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the exceptional range means in practice.

Questions about an 820 score

Why was I denied credit with an 820 credit score?

Usually because of something other than the score: income too low for the limit or loan requested, a high debt-to-income ratio, or several recent applications. The score tells a lender how you have paid in the past, not if you can afford a new payment.
