Is 760 a good credit score?

Yes, 760 is very good, and on a car loan it is about as good as it gets. FICO calls it Very good and VantageScore calls it Prime. On published rate tables, 760 opens the second-cheapest band for both mortgages and car loans, with only one band left above it.

What reaching 780 is worth

Points to go +20 From 760 to 780
New car · $35,000, 60 mo $1 /mo 6.24% → 6.2% · $39 total
Mortgage · $350,000, 30-yr fixed $24 /mo 7.39% → 7.29% · $8,576 total

780 is the last rung anywhere on the ladder, and from 760 it is the smallest step left. On the car loan the gap is close to nothing. On a 30-year mortgage it is real but modest, so it repays effort only if a purchase or a refinance is near.

What a 760 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Options available

Every program is open and priced one band from the top. Fannie Mae permits approved lenders to use VantageScore 4.0 subject to program availability, on the same fee grid, so if a quote looks high, ask which score model it was based on.

Car loan

Options available

On published car-loan tables, the 760-779 band sits a hair above the top one. For practical purposes you already get the best price a score can buy; the dealer and the lender you pick matter more now.

Credit cards

Options available

Premium cards are open to you. What decides approval and limits now is income, the limits you already have and how many accounts you opened lately.

Renting

Options available

Not something to think about at 760.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

What 760 costs you in interest

Both charts flatten out at this end. 760 is the first point of the second-lowest bar on each, and the drop to the last bar is the smallest step on either staircase.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

Is 780 worth chasing from 760?

Only with a mortgage in sight. Twenty points at this level does not come from fixing anything. It comes from time and from reporting very little debt. If a home loan is coming:

  1. Keep reported card balances small. Amounts owed are 30% of a FICO score, and it is the only large factor you can change within a month.
  2. Let the file age. Length of credit history is 15% of the score and asks nothing of you except leaving old accounts open.
  3. Treat every application as a cost. New credit is 10% of the score, and a new account also lowers the average age of the others. Open nothing new while a mortgage is in view.

Without a loan coming, 760 is already where the price lists stop caring much. When the day does come, quotes from several lenders will do more for you than the last twenty points.

What a Very good score means (740 to 799)

Near the top of every lender's price list. The rungs left are small, and almost all on the mortgage. 27.5% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the very good range means in practice.
