Is 550 a good credit score?

550 is a poor credit score, but the next useful move depends on what you need to buy. For a home, 580 is the target to discuss with an FHA lender because it changes the minimum down payment. For a car, compare financing costs now: that FHA threshold does not set your auto-loan rate.

At 550, the FHA minimum down payment is 10%; at 580 it is 3.5%, subject to the rest of the program and lender requirements. On a $250,000 home, that is $16,250 less down payment required. It is not $16,250 saved: putting less down means borrowing more for the same home.

Car averages use VantageScore 4.0; FHA requirements use the lender’s decision score. These models are not interchangeable. Neither figure guarantees approval.

Is the extra down payment the thing stopping you?

580 changes the FHA cash requirement. It does not set the price of a car loan.

If you want a home and cannot meet the 10% FHA minimum, getting the lender’s decision score to 580 could change the cash requirement substantially. If you already have enough for the down payment, compare the monthly payment, closing costs and the cash you would have left.

What a 550 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Limited

FHA permits a 10% minimum down payment for decision scores from 500 to 579. A 550 meets that score rule, but a lender can have additional requirements. The rule does not tell you the rate, closing costs or whether the whole application will pass.

Car loan

Limited

Financing may be available, but the amount, APR and term deserve as much attention as approval. Experian’s quarterly averages below cover VantageScore 4.0 tiers. They are useful scenarios only if you know which model you are comparing.

Credit cards

Limited

A secured card may be an option if you need to establish a manageable payment record. Compare the deposit, fees and repayment terms before applying. Opening a card just to chase 30 points is a poor purchase plan when the timing and effect are uncertain.

Renting

Possible

There is no universal rental minimum. Ask about the property’s actual screening policy before paying an application fee. Income, rental history and other requirements can matter alongside the credit information.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

What 550 costs you in interest

A score of 550 does not produce a mortgage quote. The daily FICO reference tables start at 620 for mortgages and 640 for new cars. The quarterly car benchmarks below offer another view, with the score model stated explicitly.

A used car can cost less and still carry a higher APR

In Experian’s Q2 2026 Subprime tier, the averages were 13.52% for new cars and 19.1% for used cars. Those are VantageScore 4.0 averages, not a promised rate for a FICO 550. Use the same amount and term when comparing the two, then repeat with the actual prices of the vehicles you are considering.

A lower vehicle price can outweigh a higher APR. What matters is the complete purchase and financing cost. Ask for the amount financed, APR, number of payments and any fees in writing; a monthly payment on its own does not tell you whether the deal is affordable.

550 and 580 do not cross a quarterly car tier

If both numbers are VantageScore 4.0 values, they sit inside Experian’s 501-600 Subprime tier. The next tier in that dataset begins at 601. That means the quarterly comparison returns the same reference rate for 550 and 580; it does not mean individual lenders must quote both scores identically.

Putting less down means borrowing more for the same home. Compare the monthly payment and cash reserve as well as the upfront requirement. Closing costs, mortgage insurance and lender requirements are additional. These examples assume the price equals the FHA adjusted value; a lower appraisal can change the cash needed.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

Make a plan around the purchase, not a 30-point promise

Two people at 550 can need very different next steps. One may have high revolving balances; another may have a payment history that needs time and consistent repayment. The score alone does not explain the cause or tell you when 580 will arrive.

  1. Identify the score the application will use. Record the model, bureau and date. A 580 in an app is not evidence that an FHA lender’s decision score has reached 580. Ask the lender which score counts before you set the target.
  2. Review the reports behind it. Check the accounts, balances and payment history at AnnualCreditReport.com. If something is inaccurate, dispute that specific record with the reporting company and information provider. A disappointing score is not itself a report error.
  3. Choose changes your budget can sustain. Pay on time and bring revolving balances down where you can. Keep the planned down payment and a workable cash reserve in view; emptying your account to improve a score can leave the purchase harder to manage.
  4. Set a review date, not a promised approval date. At that review, check what actually changed and ask the lender what it means for the application. If the target has not arrived, compare the cost of waiting with the offer available now.

For a home, the lower minimum at 580 can be worth investigating because it changes a specific cash requirement. For a car you need for work, delay has its own cost. Compare buying now with waiting, and make the current loan affordable without relying on a future refinance.

What a Poor score means (300 to 579)

Credit is still possible, but on the lender's terms: deposits, co-signers and high rates. 14.7% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the poor range means in practice.

Questions about a 550 score

Does reaching 580 save me $16,250 on a $250,000 home?

It reduces the FHA minimum down payment in this example from $25,000 to $8,750. That is less cash required for the down payment, not a reduction in the home price or an interest saving. Borrowing more can increase financing costs. Closing costs and other requirements remain.

Will going from 550 to 580 get me a cheaper car loan?

Possibly with an individual lender, but these quarterly averages cannot establish that. If the two scores are VantageScore 4.0, both are in Experian’s 501-600 tier. FICO scores must not be treated as equivalent VantageScore values.
