Is 530 a good credit score?

No, 530 is a poor credit score. It sits in FICO's Poor range and VantageScore's Subprime tier. Loans are still possible on strict terms, but the place a 530 tends to show up first is an apartment application, where screening reports are common and no official score guarantees a yes.

580 changes the mortgage, not the rent: it is the FHA line for 3.5% down. There is no universal rental score cutoff, so no single number reopens apartments the way 580 reopens a cheaper FHA loan. Fifty points is still worth chasing, although lenders and screeners may use different reports and models.

Car averages use VantageScore 4.0; FHA requirements use the lender’s decision score. These models are not interchangeable. Neither figure guarantees approval.

What a 530 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Limited

FHA with at least 10% down is the realistic option at 530; HUD's floor is 500. If you rent now and want to buy, the climb to 580 lowers that minimum to 3.5%.

Car loan

Limited

Car financing may be available, subject to lender requirements. If your VantageScore 4.0 is in the 501-600 tier, Experian’s Q2 2026 averages were 13.52% new and 19.1% used. A FICO 530 does not establish that VantageScore; compare actual APR, amount and term.

Credit cards

Limited

A secured card is the dependable route. Put one small recurring bill on it and pay it in full each month; used that way it adds on-time history and costs nothing in interest.

Renting

Limited

Possible, with conditions: a larger deposit, a co-signer or guarantor, or proof of steady income. No official minimum score exists, and the CFPB found credit history to be a limited predictor of whether tenants pay their rent.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

What 530 costs you in interest

Car loans are the only cost this page can chart, because published FICO-band rates start at 620 for mortgages and 640 for cars. Experian's averages by VantageScore tier put 530 on the subprime step.

The next step on this chart is nonprime, which begins at 601. From 530 that is a long way, so for a car bought soon, the subprime average is the realistic price. What you control today is how much you borrow.

For buyers, FHA is the realistic mortgage at 530 and the constraint is cash: 10% of the price at minimum. If you are renting and saving toward a home, the target drops to 3.5% at 580, so the savings and the climb work toward the same goal.

Putting less down means borrowing more for the same home. Compare the monthly payment and cash reserve as well as the upfront requirement. Closing costs, mortgage insurance and lender requirements are additional. These examples assume the price equals the FHA adjusted value; a lower appraisal can change the cash needed.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

How to get from 530 to 580

Fifty points. If you rent, the climb has a side benefit: the habits that move a FICO score are the same ones a landlord's screening report shows.

  1. Get your rent counted. FICO 9 includes rental history when it is reported, yet the CFPB found only 1.7% to 2.3% of adults who rent have it in their credit files. Ask your landlord or property manager whether they report payments.
  2. Pull your three reports and dispute errors. The same mistakes that drag a score down end up in tenant screening reports.
  3. Pay down card balances. Amounts owed are 30% of a FICO score, the factor that responds fastest.
  4. Keep every payment on time. Payment history is 35%, and a new late payment would show up in both your score and your next screening.

If an application comes before the score moves, bring what a score cannot show: pay stubs, a landlord reference, proof of savings. Many screening companies sell an accept-or-reject recommendation, but the landlord makes the call.

What a Poor score means (300 to 579)

Credit is still possible, but on the lender's terms: deposits, co-signers and high rates. 14.7% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the poor range means in practice.

Questions about a 530 score

Can I rent an apartment with a 530 credit score?

Possibly, with conditions such as a larger deposit or a co-signer. No official minimum score exists for renting; each landlord or screening company sets its own standard.

What credit score do you need to rent an apartment?

There is no official one. Landlords and screening companies set their own standards, and the CFPB has found credit history to be a limited predictor of paying rent.
