Is 540 a good credit score?

No, 540 is a poor credit score. It sits in FICO's Poor range and VantageScore's Subprime tier, 40 points above the lowest score FHA accepts and 40 below the one that cuts its down payment to 3.5%. Credit is available here, mostly secured, and where you apply matters almost as much as the score.

580 cuts the FHA down payment from 10% to 3.5% and moves you into FICO's Fair range. It changes little else: neither Experian's car-loan tiers nor the CFPB's card data has a step there. At 540, the next 40 points are mainly a mortgage question.

Car averages use VantageScore 4.0; FHA requirements use the lender’s decision score. These models are not interchangeable. Neither figure guarantees approval.

What a 540 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Limited

FHA with at least 10% down is the realistic route at 540, under HUD's rules for scores from 500 to 579. Veterans can also try VA, which sets no minimum score of its own; lenders set theirs.

Car loan

Limited

Car financing may be available, subject to lender requirements. If your VantageScore 4.0 is in the 501-600 tier, Experian’s Q2 2026 averages were 13.52% new and 19.1% used. A FICO 540 does not establish that VantageScore; compare actual APR, amount and term.

Credit cards

Limited

A secured card is the safe first move. CFPB data shows the largest issuers charge 8 to 10 percentage points more than small banks and credit unions in every credit tier it measured, poor credit included, so start local.

Renting

Possible

Possible with a landlord who weighs income and rent history alongside the screening report. Expect to be asked for a larger deposit or a co-signer.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

What 540 costs you in interest

This far below 620 there is no published price by FICO band, so the chart reads Experian's car-loan averages by VantageScore tier instead. 540 falls on the subprime step, the second most expensive of five.

Credit cards appear on no chart, because no official source publishes card rates by score for this range. The Federal Reserve's average on accounts that pay interest was 22.15%; at 540, expect offers above it, which is one more reason to carry no balance at all.

For a mortgage, FHA is the realistic route. At 540 you have enough room above 500 that one bad month will not shut the door, and enough distance to 580 that buying now means the full 10% down.

Putting less down means borrowing more for the same home. Compare the monthly payment and cash reserve as well as the upfront requirement. Closing costs, mortgage insurance and lender requirements are additional. These examples assume the price equals the FHA adjusted value; a lower appraisal can change the cash needed.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

How to get from 540 to 580

Forty points, and a card account can be part of how you get there. Treat it as a tool for building history, not as spending money.

  1. Apply where the prices are better. Start with a credit union or small bank you already use, and send one application at a time: each adds an inquiry, and new credit is 10% of a FICO score.
  2. Choose a secured card that reports to all three bureaus. An account only contributes to a bureau’s credit file if it is reported there.
  3. Keep the reported balance small. Amounts owed are 30% of the score, and on a low limit even a modest balance looks large. Pay it down before the statement is issued.
  4. Never pay late. Payment history is 35%. Autopay the full balance if you can, the minimum if you cannot.
  5. Read your three reports once. Dispute anything that is not yours; the bureaus must investigate.

Avoid cards that charge an annual fee plus monthly maintenance fees before you have spent anything. A secured card paid in full each month costs nothing in interest and does the same job.

What a Poor score means (300 to 579)

Credit is still possible, but on the lender's terms: deposits, co-signers and high rates. 14.7% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the poor range means in practice.

Questions about a 540 score

Can I get a credit card with a 540 credit score?

Yes, most reliably a secured card, where your deposit sets the limit. Unsecured cards for poor credit exist with low limits and high rates, and the CFPB found the largest issuers charge 8 to 10 points more than small banks and credit unions.
