Is 650 a good credit score?

650 is fair, squarely in the middle of the range. FICO's Fair band runs from 580 to 669, VantageScore calls it Near prime, and the published rate tables price it exactly like 640. Most loans are open to you. The good prices are not.

What reaching 660 is worth

Points to go +10 From 650 to 660
New car · $35,000, 60 mo $15 /mo 9.19% → 8.3% · $904 total
Mortgage · $350,000, 30-yr fixed $27 /mo 7.9% → 7.79% · $9,610 total

660 is ten points away and opens a cheaper band on both the mortgage and the car loan. The target most people set at 650 is 670, where FICO's label turns Good, but 670 sits inside the same 660-679 bands as 660. The money is at 660; the next ten points buy only the word.

What a 650 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Options available

FHA and conventional options may be available, including fixed-rate and adjustable-rate products, subject to program and lender requirements. On the mortgage staircase 650 pays more than every band above it and less than the 620s, and Fannie Mae's fee grid charges 640 through 659 the same.

Car loan

Possible

Banks, credit unions and dealer lenders will quote you, priced in the 640-659 band, the costliest on the published list. If you already carry a high-rate car loan from a lower score, 660 is the point to price a refinance.

Credit cards

Possible

Unsecured cards are realistic, but expect APRs above the 22.15% Federal Reserve average on cards that charge interest. At those rates the APR costs more than the score does, so the real fix is not carrying a balance.

Renting

Options available

No official minimum score exists for renting. If a screening report sinks an application, ask for a copy: the CFPB found these reports often contain outdated or wrong information.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

What 650 costs you in interest

On both staircases, 650 stands on the same step as 640, the 640-659 band. On the car loan that is the highest bar published; on the mortgage it is one up from the bottom. Look at the next bar down on each chart: that is what ten points buys.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

How to get from 650 to 660

Ten points. The common mistake at 650 is aiming past them, at 670 or 700, and doing something drastic to get there, such as opening new cards to raise your total limit. The inquiry and the new account cost points before the extra limit helps.

  1. Time one payment to the statement date. If any card reports more than half its limit, paying it down before the statement closes is the fastest lever on amounts owed, 30% of a FICO score.
  2. Put autopay on everything. Payment history is 35% of the score. A single new late payment does more damage than anything else on this list can repair quickly.
  3. Look for mistakes, not for miracles. Read all three reports for accounts that are not yours or payments wrongly marked late, and dispute them with each bureau. Accurate negatives can stay up to seven years, and nobody can remove them for a fee.
  4. Then stop and apply. Once a lender's pull reads 660, the next ten points change the label, not the price.

If no loan is coming, there is no rush. Older negatives weigh less as they age, as long as nothing new goes wrong.

What a Fair score means (580 to 669)

The doors open: FHA mortgages, most car lenders, starter cards. The prices are the problem. 14.9% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the fair range means in practice.

Questions about a 650 score

How far is 650 from a good credit score?

Twenty points on FICO's scale, where Good starts at 670. On VantageScore it is eleven points from Prime, which starts at 661. For published lending rates, the next better band starts at 660.

Can I buy a car with a 650 credit score?

Yes, at a fair-credit price. In myFICO's published car-loan rates, 650 falls in the 640-659 band, the most expensive one listed; the 660-679 band is cheaper.
