What a 630 credit score gets you
Mortgage
Options available
FHA and conventional options may be available, subject to lender requirements. 630 shares the published mortgage reference band with 620. The exception is an adjustable rate: if the file goes to manual underwriting at Fannie Mae, ARMs need 640.
Car loan
Possible
Car financing may be available, subject to lender requirements. If your VantageScore 4.0 is in the 601-660 tier, Experian’s Q2 2026 averages were 9.71% new and 13.93% used. A FICO 630 does not establish that VantageScore; compare actual APR, amount and term.
Credit cards
Possible
You are in the bracket the CFPB's card survey calls good (620 to 719), at its bottom. Credit unions deserve a look: in that survey, small banks and credit unions priced this bracket about ten points of APR below the largest issuers.
Renting
Possible
Screening reports show far more than a score, and the CFPB found they often carry ambiguous, outdated or wrong information. If a landlord turns you down, ask which screening company was used and get a copy.
These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.
What 630 costs you in interest
On the mortgage staircase, 630 shares the bottom step with 620: the 620-639 band is one price. The step to 640 is ten points away, and the car-loan staircase starts there too, so for now the car figures come from Experian's VantageScore tiers.

Experian's tiers are much wider than myFICO's bands. Nonprime covers everything from 601 to 660 on VantageScore, so the bar marked for 630 is the same one a 605 or a 655 borrower sees. Read it as the average for a broad group, not as a quote.
National averages by FICO band from myFICO (data: Curinos), as of October 29, 2026. The rate you are offered depends on the lender, your down payment, income and debts. Where these rates come from.

What this estimate includes
Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.
How to get from 630 to 640
Ten points is close. The trap at 630 is spending the next months on things that feel productive but barely touch a FICO score.
- Skip the credit-builder shopping. Opening a card or a loan to "add history" brings an inquiry and lowers your average account age first. New credit and length of history are a quarter of the score between them.
- Pay down revolving balances instead. Amounts owed are 30% of a FICO score, and balances are the one input you can change this month.
- Do not count on a paid-off collection to get you there. FICO 9 ignores paid third-party collections, but myFICO describes FICO 8 as the version most widely used by lenders. Pay it because you owe it, not for the points.
- Check the reports for errors first. A collection that is not yours is a different matter: dispute it with each bureau that lists it, for free.
Once the score reads 640 on a lender's pull, apply if a loan is what you are after. Waiting for 660 makes sense only if the purchase can wait too.
What a Fair score means (580 to 669)
The doors open: FHA mortgages, most car lenders, starter cards. The prices are the problem. 14.9% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the fair range means in practice.
Questions about a 630 score
Can I get an apartment with a 630 credit score?
It depends on the landlord, because there is no official minimum score for renting. A landlord who hesitates at 630 may accept a larger deposit, a co-signer or proof of steady income instead.
Is 630 good enough for an FHA loan?
Yes. FHA allows 3.5% down from a score of 580, so 630 clears it by 50 points. Above 580, HUD also allows higher debt-to-income ratios on manually underwritten loans.
