What a 780 credit score gets you
Mortgage
Options available
Top band on the rate tables and on Fannie Mae's fee grid, which since its September 30, 2026 update uses the same rows whether the lender pulls Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0. The score has done its job; the lender and the loan you pick decide the rest.
Car loan
Options available
The top band on published car-loan tables starts here. Experian, which sorts car buyers by VantageScore 4.0, still files 780 as Prime: its superprime tier starts at 781 and averaged 4.41% on new cars in Q2 2026, against 6.15% for prime. Most of that gap comes from the bottom of prime, which reaches down to 661, not from the one point between 780 and 781.
Credit cards
Options available
A strong score can support applications for competitive cards, subject to issuer requirements. Income and the number of cards you already carry will decide the premium ones.

No tenant screen will flag this score.
These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.
What 780 costs you in interest
780 is the first point of the lowest bar on both staircases, and there is no bar below it. The step that brought you here from the 760s was the smallest on either chart, which is a fair hint of how little the last points are worth.

What this estimate includes
Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.
Is there any point going higher than 780?
For borrowing, no. The useful goal now is distance from 779, so that an ordinary month does not knock you into the band below just as a lender pulls your file.
- Aim for a cushion, not a number. A score in the high 780s or 790s matters only because it keeps you above 780 when a statement reports a bigger balance than usual.
- Freeze new applications before a big loan. A new card and its inquiry are the likeliest way to lose a few points at the wrong moment.
- Read your reports before you apply. All three are free at AnnualCreditReport.com. An error is rare in a file like yours, but one is enough to drop a top-band score, and disputing it costs nothing.
Past that, a higher number is a matter of pride. These published reference tables place 820 and 780 in the same band.
What a Very good score means (740 to 799)
Near the top of every lender's price list. The rungs left are small, and almost all on the mortgage. 27.5% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the very good range means in practice.
Questions about a 780 score
Is it worth getting a credit score above 780?
Not for loan pricing. Published mortgage and car-loan rate tables and Fannie Mae's fee grid all start their best band at 780. A higher score only gives you a margin against a bad month.
Is 780 a superprime credit score?
Not on VantageScore, where superprime runs from 781 to 850 and 780 is the last point of Prime. On FICO's scale it is Very good.
