Is 770 a good credit score?

Yes, 770 is very good, and it already buys almost everything 780 does. It sits in the middle of FICO's Very good range and in VantageScore's Prime tier. On published rate tables it shares a band with 760, so the climb from 760 to here did not change a single price.

What reaching 780 is worth

Points to go +10 From 770 to 780
New car · $35,000, 60 mo $1 /mo 6.24% → 6.2% · $39 total
Mortgage · $350,000, 30-yr fixed $24 /mo 7.39% → 7.29% · $8,576 total

780 is the finish line: past it, published rate tables and Fannie Mae's fee grid charge the same all the way to 850. Ten points is close enough that one quiet billing cycle could get you there, and close enough the other way that one new card could drop you back toward 760. The mortgage gains a little at 780; the car loan almost nothing.

What a 770 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Options available

Your score will not be the obstacle in any program. From here the underwriter cares about income, debts and the property, and your pricing band is one short of the best.

Car loan

Options available

The top band on car-loan tables starts at 780, and the step to it is tiny. At this score a high quote says more about the lender or the dealer than about you, so walk in with a preapproval from a bank or credit union to compare.

Credit cards

Options available

Any mainstream or premium card is realistic. How high a limit you get depends mostly on income and on the limits you already hold.

Renting

Options available

A landlord screening on credit has nothing to question here.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

What 770 costs you in interest

Find 770 on the staircases and it shares a bar with every score from 760 to 779. That bar is one step above the lowest on each chart, and on the car chart the step is too small to see at a glance.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

How to get from 770 to 780

Ten points, with nothing to repair. What is left is small and mostly a matter of timing:

  1. Pick the month that matters. If you plan to apply for a mortgage, the balances reported on the statements just before it are the ones that count. Pay them down early in that cycle.
  2. Shop for the loan in one burst. The FTC notes that several mortgage inquiries in a short period are often counted as one. Spreading the shopping over months is what costs points.
  3. Ignore prescreened offers. They are not counted against you, so there is no score reason to opt out of them, and no reason to accept one either.
  4. Keep the old card you never use. It still contributes a limit and years of history.

These ten points will not change much. If you are not borrowing in the next year, let the score drift up on its own.

What a Very good score means (740 to 799)

Near the top of every lender's price list. The rungs left are small, and almost all on the mortgage. 27.5% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the very good range means in practice.

Questions about a 770 score

Is 770 a good credit score for a car loan?

Yes. It falls in the second-best band on published car-loan rate tables, and the step to the top band at 780 is very small. Comparing a bank or credit union preapproval with the dealer's offer is the bigger lever at this point.
