Is 830 a good credit score?

Yes, 830 is exceptional, with 50 points of room above the line where pricing stops. It is 30 points into FICO's Exceptional range and Superprime on VantageScore. The one real caution: the 830 you see is one score from one model, and a lender may be reading a different one.

Mortgage · $350,000, 30-yr fixed $0 /mo No higher band in this dataset

There is no better price above 830; the published bands end at 780. More useful than a higher number is knowing which number a lender will actually use, because that is the one that has to stay at 780 or above.

What an 830 credit score gets you

Mortgage

Options available

Top pricing, as long as the score the lender pulls agrees with yours. Mortgage lenders order reports from all three bureaus and use your middle score, so a bureau you never check can matter more than you expect.

Car loan

Options available

Top tier. Some auto lenders score applicants with a FICO Auto Score, which runs from 250 to 900, so the number the dealer quotes may not match your app. Experian's Q2 2026 superprime average was 4.41% on new cars.

Credit cards

Options available

Approved on the score. Issuers may use a FICO Bankcard Score, another industry version on the 250-to-900 scale, so seeing a different number on an issuer's notice is normal.

Renting

Options available

Many tenant screening companies sell their own rental risk scores rather than a FICO, according to the CFPB. With a credit file like yours, the credit part of that report is the strong part of your application.

These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.

What 830 costs you in interest

830 is on the cheapest bar of both charts. The charts are drawn by FICO band, and lenders price on the score they pull rather than the one in your app, so the honest reading is this: anything from 780 up gets the same bar.

What this estimate includes

Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.

Which 830 a lender will see

You do not have just one credit score, as the CFPB puts it. Before a big application, find out which one counts.

  1. Mortgages use the middle of three. The lender pulls a Classic FICO score from each bureau and takes the median. If the bureau your app shows happens to be your best one, the score on the loan file will be lower than 830.
  2. A co-borrower changes the math. With two borrowers, ask the lender how it chooses the score for pricing. An eligibility calculation does not necessarily determine the rate.
  3. Car and card lenders may use industry scores. FICO Auto and Bankcard Scores run from 250 to 900, so a quote can carry a number higher or lower than your app's.
  4. VantageScore is entering mortgages. Fannie Mae lists VantageScore 4.0 for approved lenders, subject to program availability and prices it on the same grid as Classic FICO. FHA will accept it from January 1, 2027.

The practical step is the same for all of them: pull your three reports at AnnualCreditReport.com before you apply, and dispute anything wrong with each bureau that shows it.

What an Exceptional score means (800 to 850)

The Exceptional label starts at 800; our top daily FICO reference band starts at 780. 22.8% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the exceptional range means in practice.

Questions about an 830 score

Why is my credit score different on each app?

Because there are many scores, built by different models from three separate bureau files. The CFPB says plainly that you do not have just one credit score, so an 830 on one app and a slightly different number on another is normal.
