What a 683 credit score gets you
Mortgage
Options available
Conventional and FHA loans are both open, and VA sets no minimum score of its own (lenders set theirs). On a conventional loan, Fannie Mae's price adjustment for 680–699 is higher than for 700–719, so a quote at 683 and a quote at 700 are not the same deal.
Car loan
Options available
Approved widely, priced in the 680–699 band. You have already collected one car-loan step by leaving the 660s; the next one is at 700.
Credit cards
Possible
Mainstream cards, yes. The risk at 683 is the application itself: a new account brings an inquiry and lowers the average age of your accounts, and that can be enough to cost three points.
Renting
Options available
Not an obstacle with landlords who screen on credit. Bring proof of income and rent history anyway; the CFPB found tenant screening data is often out of date or wrong, and it covers more than your score.
These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.
What 683 costs you in interest
On both charts you share a bar with 680 and with 699. Look at the bar to your right: 700 is a visible step down on the car loan and a smaller one on the mortgage, where even a small step adds up over 30 years. Then look left. The 660–679 bar is only three points behind you.

What this estimate includes
Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.
How to get from 683 to 700 without slipping first
There is no fixed timetable for seventeen points. The order of priorities matters: make sure you stay above 680, then climb.
- Stop applying for credit for a while. New credit is 10% of a FICO score. At 683, an inquiry plus a new account is the likeliest way to lose the 680 band before you reach the 700 one.
- Get reported utilization low and keep it there. Pay cards before the statement closes every month, not once. A single low month helps for a single month.
- Ask for a higher limit on a card you already hold. More limit with the same balance lowers your utilization without opening anything. Ask the issuer how it handles the request before you make it.
- Read all three reports for errors. A payment wrongly marked late can be worth more than everything above, and disputes cost nothing.
Do not judge progress point by point. A month at 691 does not change your band in these reference tables. The only reading that counts is the one on the day a lender pulls your file.
What a Good score means (670 to 739)
A good score can give you a wider choice of lenders. This is the stretch where published reference bands can still change the estimate. 20.1% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the good range means in practice.
Questions about a 683 score
Is 683 a good credit score for an apartment?
Usually, yes. There is no official minimum score for renting; landlords and screening companies set their own, and 683 clears most of them. Income, rental history and anything else in the screening report weigh in too.
