What a 730 credit score gets you
Mortgage
Options available
FHA, conventional and jumbo options may be available, subject to lender requirements. On a conventional loan you are paying the last of the Good-range price adjustments, and the step to 740 is one of the larger ones left between you and the best band.
Car loan
Options available
Approved on prime terms nearly anywhere, in the cheap part of the car staircase. Get quotes from more than one lender; at 730 the score is no longer what holds your rate up.
Credit cards
Options available
Premium and travel cards are realistic. Crossing 740 will change little on a card application, since issuers weigh income, existing debt and recent applications alongside the score.
Renting
Options available
Your score will help a rental application, not hurt it.
These are broad credit-score categories, not approval odds. Lenders also assess income, debt, credit history and their own requirements.
What 730 costs you in interest
The car chart is nearly flat from your bar onward. On the mortgage chart, 730 sits in the last expensive band of the Good range, with a visible step down at 740 and two smaller ones after it.

What this estimate includes
Estimates use national average bands, not an offer or approval prediction. Your lender may use a different score. Mortgage payments exclude taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and fees. Full-term interest assumes no refinancing, early payoff or extra payments.
How to get from 730 to 740
At 730, the ten points are mostly a question of what your cards report in the month the mortgage lender pulls your credit.
- Count back from the application. The score that prices the loan is the one pulled when you apply. Get balances low in the statement cycle before that, not after.
- Pay cards down before each statement closes. Many issuers report the statement balance, although practices vary, and amounts owed is 30% of a FICO score.
- Shop lenders in a short window. The FTC notes that several mortgage inquiries in a short period are often counted as one, so comparing lenders need not cost you points.
- No new credit until the house closes. No new cards and no store financing for furniture. New credit is 10% of the score, and 730 leaves little room for it.
If your next big loan is a car, stop here. 730 already gets close to the best published car rate, and the 740 label is something to enjoy when it comes, not something to spend effort on.
What a Good score means (670 to 739)
A good score can give you a wider choice of lenders. This is the stretch where published reference bands can still change the estimate. 20.1% of Americans with a FICO score are in this range, according to Experian's 2025 data. What the good range means in practice.
Questions about a 730 score
Is 730 a good credit score to buy a house?
Yes, and it qualifies for every major loan type. The price is the open question: on a conventional loan, 740 is the next band where Fannie Mae's fee drops, so it can pay to cross it before you lock a rate.
How do I get my credit score from 730 to 740?
Lower the card balances that appear on your statements, avoid new applications, and check your three reports for errors. Those are the factors that move fastest at this level.
